Frequently Asked Questions

Do you ship overseas?

Currently, we are selling our case inserts only to customers in the United States and Canada.

Does CaseCAD sell cases?

We generally provide only the foam inserts, not the cases themselves, which are readily available from a variety of sources (perhaps including your local camera shop).

How large of a case can I use?

We can provide foam inserts that are as large as 24 by 60 inches and up to 20 inches deep.

How long will it take to have a case insert made?

We typically turn around orders for individual inserts six business days after payment is made. Often we ship them to customers a day or two sooner than that. Rarely, it may take us a day or two more. If we expect to take any longer than six business days, we will alert you and provide our best estimate of when your insert will ship. If you are ordering multiple inserts at once, a good rule of thumb is to allow one additional business day for each additional insert in your order. If you are facing an impeding deadline, you should, however, contact us to discuss your needs, and we will gladly work with you to try to meet them.

What if the sides of my case are canted?

No problem. So long as the angle is the same on all sides, all you need to do is to specify this angle when you use the CaseCAD software's startup wizard to set up your project. Not sure what this angle is? Don't worry, the software allows you to print a paper template that you can use to measure how far the sides of your case depart from vertical.

With CaseCAD's free software and integrated fabrication service, just about anyone can obtain a professional-quality foam insert for a hard-sided equipment case. It takes only an hour or so to master our simple CAD software and six business days (or less) to have a precision case interior made up for you. So why not have the inside of your case finally look every bit as professional as the equipment it houses?

Rigid carrying cases are wonderful. Their tough exteriors and forgiving foam-filled interiors inspire confidence that your equipment is well shielded from abuse. But they present a problem if you have to configure the interior yourself, because making cutouts in foam by hand is nearly impossible to do neatly or precisely. Case manufacturers often supply pre-scored foam to help people cope, but this kind of foam rapidly falls apart with use, as you can see in the image to the left.

A better solution is to have foam custom cut for the application at hand. In the past that’s been awkward and expensive, but CaseCAD makes it easy for you to design the case interior you want and have it fabricated within days for a very reasonable cost.

Another reason not to use pre-scored foam (over and above the fragility and amateurish appearance of the results) is that the fit will likely be poor, perhaps causing frustration each time you try to withdraw something from a tight-fitting pocket. A further worry is that the foam used for this is quite squishy. It needs to be: otherwise the crudely shaped pockets you make by plucking out cubes of foam would not accommodate your equipment. Such soft foam offers limited protection, because heavy items will tend to “bottom out” if the case is dropped.

Up until now, people who weren't content with sloppy cuts or pockets plucked from a grid of soft, pre-scored foam had few options. Even businesses outfitting multiple cases were hard pressed, unless they were purchasing large quantities of single design.

CaseCAD solves these problems by offering user-friendly software that puts the power of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing at your fingertips. With our software, you don’t need to have an engineering degree to design a Sample insert 3professional-quality case insert. And once you’ve come up with your design, we can fabricate it for you within days for a very reasonable cost. What’s more, we offer a fully functioning version of our design software for free.

We have made it particularly easy for owners of the most popular Pelican Protector Cases™ (our favorite line) to configure the overall size of their foam inserts, having merely to choose the appropriate model in the CaseCAD software's start-up wizard. CaseCAD can also be used to design custom foam inserts for other cases. Just answer the series of simple questions presented to you by the software at start-up time.

So put down that kitchen knife or razor blade and pick up our software. Although taking advantage of our fabrication service costs more than purchasing pre-scored foam, our custom inserts will give your case a much higher level of functionality, durability and appearance.

Pocket bevelingWant to improve the appearance of your case insert even more? For a modest surcharge, you can add beveling to the top of the pockets, as was done for the insert shown at the left.
